Orchards for Armley

Growing fruit on common land

Orchards for Armley is a collaboration between Armley Common Right Trust and Fruit Works Co-operative to boost community fruit growing on commonly owned land. Armley is unique for having six patches of common land that is collectively owned by local residents.

Building on the success of an orchard planted in 2025 at Hill Top Moor, this project has two strands: nurturing and expanding the existing orchard at Hill Top Moor through ongoing care and additional planting, and establishing a new community orchard on Far Fold Moor together with Christ Church Upper Armley primary school.

Alongside tree planting, we will deliver a programme of seasonal community events to build fruit-growing skills and celebrate the orchards.

Why fruit trees?

In towns and cities, our community gardens and home gardens are some of the best places to support nature and grow more of our own food. Planting fruit trees can:

  • Increase tree cover across the neighbourhood

  • Provide fresh, healthy fruit for you and your community

  • Create valuable habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife

  • Help clean the air and store carbon

  • Inspire you to grow more food

  • Build a stronger connection with the natural world right on your doorstep

By participating in this project, you’ll be bringing all of these benefits to Armley.
